The Car Club

Alfa Romeo Alfa Spider
In Summary, MPH06 was a brilliant show offering live action, an opportunity to get up close to some great supercars, and a chance to see some of the latest car releases first hand. The UK motor show scene used to be very quiet outside of the summer period, but then along came the brilliant Autosport show to start the year off in style in January, and now the equally fantastic MPH series has become established as the ultimate way to round off the car show scene late in the year. MPH07 is expected to take place in November October 2008, and as soon as the dates are known it will be going in our diariesFord, and their various subsidiaries, were well represented at the show. There was also a Volvo stand showing a number of the company's recent vehicles, including the XC90.

MPH06 is both a live show, hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Tiff Needell, and also a fantastic show featuring most of today's great supercars, with plenty of great sports cars, and a few of the latest 'normal' cars thrown in for good measure.
The live show is a great experience; If you're a fan of Top Gear then you will absolutely love it; all of the best bits of Top Gear that could possibly be transferred to a very large stage are packed into the show. The major theme of the humour this year was the missing Richard Hammond, who is still recovering from the high speed accident sustained in York. Within the humour it's clear that they're so incredibly relieved that it is something they can joke about, rather than being the tragedy that it so nearly was.

Europe Russian interests bought half of the control of Magna Corp., Canada's sixth-largest corporation and a world leader in assembly-plant and parts technologies. The intention is to build a huge auto sector by using energy supplies as a leverage to open Chinese and Indian markets. This week, Moscow issued a decree banning new foreign auto plants. It also plans to use energy leverage to sell in Europe and strong-arm partnerships with Germany's car companies. Japan Toyota is about to become the world's largest carmaker and is playing a cunning, some say hypocritical, game to defeat Detroit by joining its lobbyists who are fighting fuel efficiencies. Toyota hopes Detroit continues to produce gas-guzzlers so it has the world hybrid market to itself. China Chery Automobile Co. is the front-runner and China has mandated that by 2020 any car sold in that country must be a hybrid and made in China.

Mission accomplished CarMax!

The fourth-quarter's numbers show those efforts bearing fruit. Gross margin jumped to 15.7% for the quarter, from 12.6% in the year-ago period and from 12.8% in the third quarter, and CarMax returned to operating profitability. Bottom line, the company ended the quarter with a 2.6% net profit margin ($0.17 per share) and about 0.8% net margin ($0.27) for the year.
Meanwhile, the company generated its first actual
free cash flow in seven years. Thanks to inventory liquidation and cuts in capital spending, CarMax pushed through $78.9 million in free cash flow for the year. Looking forward, with the capital budget slashed to just $20 million for fiscal 2010, I think it's safe to say we'll see far more cash roll in this year as well.
So CarMax is doing better than the people who build the cars it sells. But is relative outperformance reason enough to own the stock? Need some help answering that question? Take our Motley Fool Inside Value newsletter out for a
